The Concord Coalition has an interesting piece they have posted on their Facebook page detailing the debt to GDP issue - and what it means if we continue to kick the can down the road. Among the conclusions, "[The Treasury Department has determined that] the debt-to-GDP ratio will continually increase over the next 75 years and beyond, which means current policies are not sustainable.” I chuckle that the government needs a report to conclude what is obvious to us who have to manage a budget based on our incomes; that is, if you cannot pay your debts, you are headed to bankruptcy and surrendering your choices to an arbitrator. The report goes on to say that, "Persistent deficits of this magnitude would cause the debt-to-GDP ratio to steadily rise from 62 percent of GDP in 2010 to 130 percent in 2040, and to 350 percent by 2085. Interest on the debt would climb from 1.4 percent of GDP in 2010 to 19 percent by 2085." What we need to demand from our government is real solutions - NOW. Christopher Culp in his article "How to Solve the Debt Crisis" notes that we are facing that Argentina faced in the 80's: For example, a bank in the U.S. makes a loan to the government of Argentina in order to foster development. The Argentine government dispenses the money to the private sector, but because the rate of return is so low, private investors merely place the money in U.S. banks. The result is that the government of Argentina owes money that it cannot repay to American banks, and the Argentine economy has nothing to show for it. The loan money, intended to develop Argentina, is sitting in U.S. banks, out of reach of both the Argentine government and its original U.S. lenders. Replace Argentina with Federal Reserve and you have the exact scenario playing out in the US Government this very moment. Obviously this didn't work in the 80's and it is not working now - so what should we do? The answer is not more government intervention or selling debt to foreign countries. But rather, the government turning over government run sectors in debt-for-equity swaps to the private sector. Such results are an established and effective means of both facilitating growth and removing the government role from the economy - think health care, social security, etc. If I piqued your interest, read more... |

There is no greater view outside of a large living room window at Christmas than the fall of winter snow. Already at worship of the innocent, new born King, this seems nature's perfect praise offering. It is a pure gesture that leaves me in absolute awe. What glorious pursuits innocence, perfection and purity are in nature. Only the Perfect achieves these pursuits with absolute satisfaction to both man and nature. For men, the purest pursuits are of life, liberty and real property. While the purest joy is to be in the presence of God, our founding fathers assured us no less than happiness in our God given pursuit. Yet, for some, even the pursuits of life, liberty and real property are not pure enough... |

This is from an email I received last week: Company Memo FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: November 8, 2010 RE: Gala Christmas Party
I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place on December 23rd, starting at noon in the private function room at the Grill House. There will be a cash bar and plenty of drinks! We'll have a small band playing traditional carols... feel free to sing along. And don't be surprised if our CEO shows up dressed as Santa Claus! A Christmas tree will be lit at 1:00 PM. Exchanges of gifts among employees can be done at that time; however, no gift should be over $10.00 to make the giving of gifts easy for everyone's pockets. This gathering is only for employees! Our CEO will make a special announcement at that time! Merry Christmas to you and your family, Patty
FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: November 9, 2010 RE: Gala Holiday Party
In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees. We recognize that Hanukkah is an important holiday, which often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year. However, from now on, we're calling it our "Holiday Party." The same policy applies to any other employees who are not Christians and to those still celebrating Reconciliation Day. There will be no Christmas tree and no Christmas carols will be sung. We will have other types of music for your enjoyment. Happy now? Happy Holidays to you and your family, Patty FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All Employees DATE: November 10, 2010 RE: Holiday Party
Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking table, you didn't sign your name. I'm happy to accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a table that reads, "AA Only", you wouldn't be anonymous anymore. How am I supposed to handle this? Somebody? And sorry, but forget about the gift exchange, no gifts are allowed since the union members feel that $10.00 is too much money and the executives believe $10.00 is a little chintzy. REMEMBER: NO GIFTS EXCHANGE WILL BE ALLOWED FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director To: All Employees DATE: November 11, 2010 RE: Generic Holiday Party
What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during daylight hours. There goes the party! Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees' beliefs.. Perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party or else package everything for you to take it home in little foil doggy baggy. Will that work? Meanwhile, I've arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet, and pregnant women will get the table closest to the restrooms. Gays are allowed to sit with each other. Lesbians do not have to sit with Gay men, each group will have their own table. Yes, there will be flower arrangement for the Gay men's table. To the person asking permission to cross dress, the Grill House asks that no cross-dressing be allowed, apparently because of concerns about confusion in the restrooms. Sorry. We will have booster seats for short people. Low-fat food will be available for those on a diet. I am sorry to report that we cannot control the amount of salt used in the food . The Grill House suggests that people with high blood pressure taste a bite first. There will be fresh "low sugar" fruits as dessert for diabetics, but the restaurant cannot supply "no sugar" desserts. Sorry!
Did I miss anything?!?!? Patty FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director TO: All F*%^ing Employees DATE: November 12, 2010 RE: The F*%^ing Holiday Party
I've had it with you vegetarian pricks!!! We're going to keep this party at the Grill House whether you like it or not, so you can sit quietly at the table furthest from the "grill of death," as you so quaintly put it, and you'll get your f*%^ing salad bar, including organic tomatoes. But you know, tomatoes have feelings, too. They scream when you slice them. I've heard them scream. I'm hearing them scream right NOW! The rest of you f*%^ing wierdos can kiss my *ss. I hope you all have a rotten holiday! The B*tch from H*ll!!! FROM: Joan Bishop, Acting Human Resources Director DATE: November 15, 2010 RE: Patty Lewis and Holiday Party
I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing Patty Lewis a speedy recovery and I'll continue to forward your cards to her. In the meantime, management has decided to cancel our Holiday Party and give everyone the afternoon of the 23rd off with full pay. Happy Holidays! Joan |

"By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall!"
Remember those stirring words of John Dickinson? They evoke the spirit of representative government so strongly that even George Washington is rumored to have echoed them at the start of the Constitutional Convention. Patrick Henry, also, was quoted to have said, "Let us trust God, and our better judgment, to set us right hereafter. United we stand, divided we fall. Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs."
Strong words, indeed; but are they still followed? Many lament the long, slow, painful fall from grace our country's government has experienced since its optimistic inception. We hear daily of the loss of basic freedoms, States' rights, and the precepts of the Constitution itself at the hands of our chosen legislators, executors, and judges. Are we also losing the values that underpinned the formation of our Republic?... |
