For Oregon concealed handgun permit (CHP) holders your rights are coming under attack from the media and those groups that want to know who you are. With various cases throughout the country, the media is going for an all out attack on your 2nd Amendment rights! How can this be? They say it’s in the name of public interest and public safety. A new law is making its way through the legislature in Salem. With this law it’s supposed to protect handgun owners from making their personal information public. This power and authority rests in the hands of your local sheriff already, so why do we need this law? There are groups and media corporations that for the sake of a story would publish this information and make it public knowledge. This has already been done in one corner of the country when a concealed handgun owner went and killed someone. The local paper went and got the information not only for that individual but also the information for everyone in the county who had one also, and then they published the whole list in the paper. Talk about invasion of privacy! Even though the current statutes do state the power to release this information rests with the sheriffs of any particular county. This new law will help strengthen the authority they already have. The one thing that it will do is make the sheriff’s decision open to legal appeal. This could have dire consequences for those in the state that have these licenses. Your personal safety may be at stake just because you have one or may have applied for one. All due to the local paper publishing your personal information just to make their story. Please contact your local sheriff and encourage them to keep this information private and to help protect your 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms!
